From Arsenic to Found Grace: A solo exhibition by Laura Williams

3 - 27 May 2023
Press release

A direct nod to the 1944 black comedy film Arsenic and Old Lace, From Arsenic to Found Grace recalls a cast of Catholic Saints alongside martyrs, bereft brides, Adams and Eves. Depicted amongst lush Gardens of Eden, within dimly lit gothic interiors and with backgrounds of Williams' recognisable arsenic wallpaper, Williams shares her "personalised and perverse" versions of stories both known and unknown. In her own words, Williams shares that From Arsenic to Found Grace "... brings together past and present experiences, cultural capital, and long term conditioning to explore, understand, exorcise and unmask." With references that are religious, art historical, cinematic and autobiographical in origin, From Arsenic to Found Grace offers rich narrative content with Williams' unmistakeable visual vocabulary.
