Ara within the Āhuru: Heidi Brickell, Maioha Kara, Tessa Russell, Shannon Te Ao and George Watson
Heidi Brickell (co-curator of the exhibition) Ara within the Āhuru is a title replete with nuance and latent meaning. Translating as pathways within a sheltered space where space refers not only to the privacy and solitude of an individual's own psyche but also with and within community, Ara within the Āhuru invites a small group of Māori artists whose practices' address this concept openly and abstractly.
Materially diverse, Ara within the Āhuru brings together one to three works by each of the five artists including bioplastic paintings, works in timber, paint on canvas and photography. Installed in a manner which supports unfurling understandings, Ara within the Āhuru offers pathways into the future via collective contribution.
