In search of lost time: Chauncey Flay

Press release

In search of lost time sees Flay's continued exploration of the human/environment relationship through the act of working with New Zealand stone. Previous exhibitions have offered a multitude of materials (basalt, marble, coral and brick). In search of lost time however presents solely New Zealand greywacke in the hopes of inviting a slower, more reflective experience.

In conversation with Flay in the lead up to the exhibition, Flay states "In search of lost time brings together two series I have been working on over the past two-four years, the Bunker series and the Inversion series, and will be the first time they have been exhibited in direct conversation with one another. The observation of stone being quarried, creating a vast negative void in the landscape, and then creating new structures from that material, is a meditation on the temporality of all things and an exploration into mortality. Scale relationships are key to these ideas, I am looking forward to exhibiting a large work in the gallery space for the first time."
